This is a very special table with a history. This slab of spalted* holly is over 125 years old. As holly trees grow mainly vertically, it takes a very long time for the trunk to be thick enough to make tables, so holly is quite rare.
This slab had a lot of soft areas that we had to remove and fill with resin. We went with a black resin to really highlight the black spalted lines in the wood. Due to the slab having been drying in a barn for 25 years, we needed to add a surface coat of resin to full protect and preserve the wood. We finished this table with hairpin legs.
* if a wood is spalted it means that when the tree was alive it had a fungus growing in the wood, as the wood is dried this fungus dies and forms hard black lines through the wood that follow the grain.
Size: 62cm long, 52 wide and 43cm high
